Big boost to Uganda cranes in CHAN 2024 competition by the President.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has announced a massive financial boost for the Uganda Cranes, pledging a winning bonus of UGX 1.2 billion for every victory at the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024). The announcement, delivered by Speaker of Parliament Hon. Anita Among alongside FUFA and government officials, has been described as one of the largest per-match incentives ever offered to a Ugandan national team. According to FUFA President Eng. Moses Magogo, each member of the 35-person contingent—including players, coaches, and technical staff—will receive about UGX 30 million per win. The pledge has been complemented by additional support, with Speaker Anita Among personally contributing Shs 70 million to the team and promising further rewards, while businessman Hamis Kiggundu (“Ham”) has offered Shs 20 million per win. The incentive comes as Uganda prepares for a crucial Group C opener against Algeria at Mandela National Stadium, Namboole, a match that is expected to set the tone for the tournament. Museveni’s pledge also intensifies a regional wave of presidential sports incentives, as neighboring leaders, including Kenya’s William Ruto and Tanzania’s Samia Suluhu Hassan, have also promised significant rewards to their national teams. This unprecedented financial motivation is seen as both a morale booster for the players and a signal of Uganda’s growing investment in sports as a unifying and prestigious national endeavor.
