WEEK REVIEW: FUFA AND UGANDA NETBALL FEDERATION NAME NATIONAL TEAMS PLUS SPORTS EVENTS LINED UP FOR THE WEEKEND

FOOTBALL
With one week to the kick off of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, Uganda named its 23 squad that includes Denis Onyango, Jamal Salim Magoola, Robert Odongkara, Murushid Jjuuko, Bevis Mugabi, IsaacMuleme, Hassan Wasswa Mawanda, Wakiro Nico Wadada, Joseph Benson Ochaya, Timothy Denis Awany, Godfrey Walusimbi, Ronald Mukiibi, William Kizito Luwagga, Khalid Aucho, Mike Azira, Faruku Miya, Tadeo Lwanga, Allan Kateregga, Lumala Abdu, Emmanuel Arnold Okwi, Patrick Henry Kaddu, Derrick Nsibambi and Allan Kyambadde. Uganda is drawn in group A with Egypt, Zimbabwe and DR Congo in the tournament scheduled for 21st June to 19th July 2019. The Cranes are currently camping in United Arab Emirates and will play a friendly game against Ivory Coast on 15 June 2019. The Cranes also drew 0-0 against Turkmenistan in another friendly match.

ATHLETICS
Qualifications are underway for the IAAF World Athletics Championships scheduled for 28th Sept to 06th Oct 2019 in Doha, Qatar, and Commonwealth Champion Stella Chesang clocked 15:00.72 to set a new 5000m National Record and finished in 8th position, while Sarah Chelangat posted 15:12.19 at the Oslo Diamond League in Netherlands to qualify for the Doha Meet.

BASKETBALL
Uganda’s National Basketball Teams, the Silverbacks (Men) and Gazelles (Women) started non residential training for Qualifiers of the 1st AfroCAN Men and AfroBasket Women Championships that shall be hosted in Kampala from 26th June to 01st July 2019 at the Lugogo MTN Arena.
Uganda will battle out Burundi, Egypt, Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Eritrea and Ethiopia for the top slot to participate in the 1st AfroCAN Men due in Mali from 16th to 28th July 2019 and AfroBasket Women 2019 due in August.

NETBALL
The UK Based professional Mary Nuba joined the She Cranes training camp as Uganda named its squad to for the forthcoming 2019 Netball World Cup scheduled for 12th to 21st July 2019 in Liverpool England. Team Uanda includes: Betty Kizza, Jesca Achan, Joan Nampungu, Lilian Ajio, Mary Nuba, Muhayimina Namuwaya, Peace Proscovia, Racheal Nanyonga, Ruth Meeme, Stella Nanfuka, Stella Oyella and Sylvia Nanyonga.

In Women Football, Makerere University defeated Doves 2-0 to claim the FUFA Women Cup title at Startimes Stadium, Lugogo.

GOLF
Uganda emerged overall winners of the 2019 Africa Zone IV Tournament in Bujumbura, Burundi, while at the same event, the Africa Region 4 Annual meeting had Uganda Golf Union President Innocent Kihika elected as new regional chairman and consequently won hosting of the 2020 Africa Region 4 Championships, in Uganda.

USPA May Sports Personality
Powerlifter Roy Mubiru was voted the Uganda Sports Press Associations (USPA) Sports personality for the month of May 2019. The accolade comes after Mubiru winning TWO gold medals at the World Powerlifting Championships in Ukraine in the month of May.

COMMUNITY SPORTS
National Council of Sports joined Aliguma Foundation and the Italian Embassy in Uganda to the send off of upcoming journalist Gloria Nicole Apio to Italy for the AIPS Young Reporters Programme and during the event, the NCS General Secretary, Dr. Patrick Ogwel donated Sports equipment (Footballs, Volleyballs and Netballs) in support of Community Sports in Acholi Quarters, Mbuya. Apio is a beneficiary of the Aliguma Foundation that uses sports as one of the tools to improve and impact community lives especially in slums and NCS has going forward pledged to partner with the charity organisation to ensure sports development in different communities.
