XXI COMMONWEALTH GAMES MEDALISTS REWARDED WITH UGX. 100MILLION

National Council of Sports has rewarded Team Uganda’s medalists at the 21st Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast in Australia last April with Ugx. 100 Million.

Two Gold medalist Joshua Cheptegei was rewarded with Ugx. 50 Million for his historical victories in 5000m and 10000m races at the Commonwealth Games.

Stella Chesang got Ugx. 20 Million for winning Uganda's third gold medal in the women’s 10000m at the Games while silver medalist Solomon Mutai was rewarded with Ugx.15 Million for his efforts in men’s Marathon.

Another runner Mercyline Chelangat and boxer Miiro Juma pocketed Ugx. 7.5 Million each for winning bronze medals at the Games.

NCS Chairman, Mr. Bosco Onyik announced the rewards at a press conference at the Council headquarters in Lugogo on Tuesday and handed each individual winner cheques for their respective money.

The NCS Chairman noted that '' Recognition, appreciation and reward are key aspects in sports performance for not only does it put value to effort but goes a long way in motivating athletes to always work harder to attain the best performance"

“As a nation, we would like to most sincerely thank you for marketing Uganda, for flying our national flag and making Ugandans proud. As NCS, we have opened a new chapter to always recognize and reward our outstanding athletes,” Mr. Onyik said.

Mr. Bosco Onyik was flanked at the press conference by his Vice Chairman Technical Hajj Zubair Galiwango, member of the NCS board Mr. Patrick Okanya, Commonwealth Games Chef de Mission Beatrice Ayikoru.

Others who attended the historical press conference were Uganda Olympic Committee Vice President Andrew Tashobya, Uganda Athletics Federation President Dominic Otuchet and Uganda Boxing Federation President Moses Muhangi.

Acting General Secretary of NCS Dr. Patrick Ogwel and Assistant General Secretary David Katende also witnessed the event in the morning before NCS hosted the winners to a luncheon on in the afternoon.

Both the athletes and the officials applauded NCS for the gesture to reward them for their efforts saying it will encourage them to do more in subsequent competitions.

The NCS Chairman, thanked the President of Uganda, His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni together with First Lady Janet Museveni and State Minister for Sports Honorable Charles Bakkabulindi for steering well the sports sector to which they have given recognition.
